good and bad session - by: alacant

H everyone
Our Windows to Ubuntu migration is going well and we have had some nice shots from ekos.

I'ts difficult to know what we're doing wrong. Last night we had a crash (kstars disappeared from the screen), a failed meridian flip (could not solve on the other side of the meridian) and after the failed flip, restarting the guiding resulted in PHD2 being instructed to re-calibrate a previous -good-calibration.
Otherwise, we obtained a good set of frames of m57 and m20.

I've put the logs here:
drive.google.com/open?id=1hRe12w3rZA7KBjR_VeutuUfmedlMCpsl
If anyone has the patience and goodwill to have a look and tell us what we're doing wrong we would really appreciate it.

TIA and clear skies,
Steve

Planewave L-350 Mount support - by: ollie

Does anyone know if Planewave offers an INDI driver (or plans to release one) for their direct drive mounts, such as the L-350?

I can contact them directly if nobody knows offhand.

Thank you,
Ollie

A general discussion of all things HDX110 / EQ-8 - by: xsnrg

I would like to open a general discussion about the HDX-110 (Orion) . EQ-8 mount. This mount has been available for a while now, but I have recently received the plates to attach mine to my pier. This thing is a beast in a good way, but has some differences from my previous Sirius EQ-G. I am hoping my questions and ponderings might help others that have are might be considering this mount.

Let's get started with some first perceptions.

I knew it was large. My scope sits about 2-3 inches higher than it did with my EQ-G. Everything about it is larger and heavier, which makes sense given it's weight handling ability. I have it mounted on a 12" concrete pier. The handles are in a nice place for moving it around making its weight seem not quite as bad. I still would not want to use this as my portable mount setup.

I used Ekos to do the polar alignment (of course), doing a bounce east/west method. Solve to the east, make adjustments, solve to the west, make adjustments, solve to the west average the adjustment, solve back to the east average the adjustments. This got me to a 22 arc second repeatable alignment.

- First question then, for anyone that has this mount, how close to 0 did you strive for, and what were you able to achieve?

I then did a two-star alignment and started to jump around to different objects. I had a good bit of trouble with the scope pointing all sorts of places it should not have been when selecting the two stars. On a hunch, I thought perhaps there was some junk left in the EQMod settings from the Sirisu configuration. I completely removed all my stored settings for INDI eqmod, and restarted. After I figured that out, I was very happy with the go-to through kstars. Things were appearing right in the center of the frame. I then tried a test that my Sirius sometimes struggled with. Go-to with a meridian flip. I was shocked at how well it did. I used to capture, solve, and sync another point when doing this because the Sirius would be off a bit. The HDX put objects in the center of the frame flip after flip. Since I was in experiment mode, I decided to try the auto position button. This seemed to find home without any trouble at all, and I set my Park position from the auto-home.

I didn't get a lot of capturing done the first night as I was too busy playing around, but when I did try tracking, it had no trouble staying under 1 arc second RMS, and netted this image of M8 after processing about 30 images with APP: Flickr M8

Last night I had about enough clear sky to capture 30 frames of M20 before the clouds came in, again processed with APP: Flickr M20 July 16

Question 2. I know what PEC is, and some about how it works. What I don't know is how it works with INDI/Ekos. How to train it and use it during a session? Where can I find more out (besides source code, of course)?

Question 3. I bought this 2nd hand, and it came with the GPS module. Is this module supported through the eqmod driver? I have not tried using it yet as I have a USB puck unit on the pier already. I would like to move the puck to the portable setup though if the HDX GPS works.

Finally, who all has one of these? I know @knro does. Surely there are others out there. What tricks have you learned?

Thanks!
Jim

Phd2 guide after meridian flip - by: alacant

Hi everyone
After a flip and realignment, phd2 does not restart. Hitting guide manually causes a recalibration which while is needed for the internal guider, is not necessary or desirable for phd2.
The workaround is to stop and restart phd2 manually and restart it from within rather than from ekos.
Anyone else finding this?

Setting up astro software under Manjaro (or Arch) Linux - by: avarakin

Hi,

Manjaro distribution is currently becoming one of the most popular distributions. According to Distrowatch, it is the most popular distribution and for a good reason: it is very easy to install, provides access to very recent packages and at the same time it is pretty stable. I am running it for about a year and am very happy so far.
So I decided to try to setup all the astronomy software I use under Manjaro. It turned out pretty simple once I figured out few issues. I wrote a script which should do the whole thing without much effort. It installs KSstars/Ekos, PHD2, astrometry, ccdciel, SkyChart, indi and sextractor (which is highly recommended to help with plate solving).
Here is the script:

sudo pacman -Syu
sudo pacman -S --needed kstars breeze-icons yaourt arduino binutils patch cmake make libraw libindi wxgtk2 gpsd gcc

yaourt -Sya --noconfirm ccdciel
yaourt -Sya --noconfirm libindi_3rdparty
yaourt -Sya --noconfirm open-phd-guiding-git
yaourt -Sya --noconfirm skychart
yaourt -Sya sextractor-bin
yaourt -Sya astrometry.net

wget broiler.astrometry.net/\~dstn/4100/index-4107.fits
wget broiler.astrometry.net/\~dstn/4100/index-4108.fits
wget broiler.astrometry.net/\~dstn/4100/index-4109.fits
sudo mv index-410[789].fits /usr/share/astrometry/data

Please let me know what you think.

The following are the instructions for users of EkosLive Beta on how to get started. You need KStars Bleeding package from Nightly PPA repository for this to work! You need to be enrolled in the beta program to use this, so have your StellarMate username & password ready.

1. Connect to EkosLive from KStars

2. Go to EkosLive Website and sign in

3. If Ekos is not online (i.e. you didn't start any profiles yet). Click on the burger menu to bring out Profiles & Settings.

4. Start your desired profile

5. Congrats, now you're online!

The Cloud icon indicates whether you're connect to the EkosLive cloud service or not. The computer icon indicates whether you Ekos is online or not. By default, Cloud Storage and Sounds are disabled. To enable then, go to Settings and turn them on.

If Cloud Storage is enabled, then if you capture a sequence, the images are stored on the cloud. Previews are not stored in the cloud.

No data is saved in the beta program!

Warning! All settings and images on the cloud are going to be deleted after the program is over!

Import masters in Dark library? - by: sergiod

Hi everyone. Is there any way (or trick) to import my master darks into the Dark Library? E.g., my guider camera doesn't have a shutter and I find uncomfortable to manually have to cover the guidescope every once in a while (sometimes in the middle of a guiding session, when temperature change exceeds the threshold, I guess).

Thanks!

Hitechastro DC 2 focuser controller - by: Temmerman

Hi,

I was wondering whether anybody else owns a HitechAstro DC focuscontroller 2. Did anybody manage to make this controller work with the existing driver indi_hitecastrodc_focus?
Jasem has been looking into it but couldn't fix it.
He committed the new updated HitechAstroDC focuser to indi_dev branch, as he has no idea how to proceed. The code is in Github if anyone is interested to take a look at it, but HID communication with the driver fails beyond the initial handshake.

Thanks,

Robert

Ekos tries to offset focus when no focuser defined in profile - by: sergiod

$

Hi everyone. I have two profiles in Ekos:

- telescope #1 with focuser (imager, guider, etc)
- telescope #2 without focuser

For the first profile, I've defined filter offsets for convenience. But when I use the second profile, if I change filters in capture module and start an exposure, Ekos seems to try to apply the offset configuration. As no focuser is available, Ekos keeps waiting ("Changing focus offset by n steps" message) and the exposure is not started. At that point I have to cancel the exposure and try again, this second time Ekos doesn't see a filter change so the exposure is initiated as expected.

Thanks

indi_gphoto_ccd with DSLR T7i - by: noriQ

Hello.
I have a problem.

I am using Canon T7i (X9i).
The INDI module I am using is indi-gphoto (2.2 to 201807161307 ~ ubuntu 16.04.1).
Although 1 second capture works, can not capture longer than that (eg 2 seconds).
If the capture operation fails, all subsequent capture commands will not be accepted and capture will be impossible.
Sometimes Err 70 is displayed on the camera.
I will attach a log.
When using Canon EOS 600D, there seems to be no trouble.

Are there any advice?
Thank you.

Canon DSLR and video: Some questions - by: seescho

Hallo

It was a long fight, but finally I succeded in compiling kstars, libindi and astrometry.net on my openSUSE Tumbleweed Laptop. The biggest deal was to get astrometry.net working for solving offline.

Now I´m trying to learn, how to use my astrostuff with kstars/EKOS, beginning with my EOS 6D. Step for step. So some questions for my DSLR.

1. Can´t I record a video with the full resolution of the camera-sensor? If I click "Live Video" in the EKOS-Camera-Modul, the resoluton in Indi Image Settings jumps down to 960 x 640 px. If I stop Live Video, I can reset Width and Height to the original full resolution, but after clicking Live Video, the resolution is only 960 x 480 px again.
If I record a video, the resulting ser-file has 960 x 480 px.

2. Where can I set exposure time and ISO for the video-stream?
I tried to set the Exposure duration in the streaming-tab of indi control panel. But nothing changes.
In image settings, i found a field for adjusting ISO, but nothing changes in the Live video preview.

That´s all for now

Timer not accurate at 1 second exposure - by: gbeaton

When I set the exposure for 1 sec, it ends up being about 3 or 4.

I notices the shutter opening right away but the timer takes a couple of seconds to start.

Using kstars on Mac remote to stellarmate.

its making flat exposures quite inaccurate.

Also, bias was 0.03 instead of .000125 or thereabouts.

kstars frustrations - by: tmdag

After few conversations on this forum, I have learned few things about setting things up with kstars and I wanted to give another try.
So I have aligned my Celestron Nexstar Evolution 6. Weirdly enough, that alignment is not so precise, or probably I am doing something wrong (not sure how to make alignment more precise?)
I mean it works okish for first few mins and then is completly misaligned.

I am connecting CCD, and fireing things up. But from there, I have still no idea what I am doing and tutorials I found so far as kind of out of date so I hope that somebody could guide me here :)
After few updates, I have noticed that picture from CCD comes black and white instead of color and it has some weird grid pattern that was not there before. Not sure if this is new feature of if something is not right ? (you can see it in youtube attached ~1:00min)

Guide TAB
To be hones I am not 100% sure what should i expect from this guiding feature, what exactly it would guide ? but at this moment it did nothing for me. I hit "capture", clicked on my point of interest, guide and nothing happened. It makes circle around planet but nothing besides that.

Solve TAB
yet again, not sure what I am supposed to get out of this solve - is it supposed to help stabilizing alignment? keep track of tracked object?
Anyway, I click "capture and solve" clicked on target, and I thought "slew to target" would do something, but it did nothing :(

CCD Tab:
Live preview would be useful to see what is happening, but I have no idea where could I set up exposure for live preview.
"preview" button is not helping me much, besides that It react to set exposure value.

From that point I don't know where I could even start making photos/videos from stacking. Does even kstars have an option for stacking photos?
I have so many questions and I was unable to find much of help within videos that would guide me through.
Most frustrating part is not being able to even start. I would love to have some clear steps and understand how should i approach in order to get proper photo :) From that point I could just focus on refining it.

Hello,
When I try to compile the latest INDI release on Ubuntu 18.04, I get an error for the SBIG driver. This error happens both when compiling individually the SBIG driver and when compiling ALL the drivers. Here is what I get:

I followed all the steps given on the GitHub INDI site, but I had to install extra libraries to run Cmake for the drivers:
libavcodec-dev libavdevice-dev libavformat-dev libavutil-dev libswscale-dev libtiff-dev libdc1394-22-dev

Thanks in advance if someone has a clue about what is happening.

Dithering with Two Cameras (DSLR/CCD) - by: AstroWill

$

Hi,

I had posted this in the general thread but I think it's more of a feature request and hence posting here.

Can anyone make any suggestions on how the control of more than two imaging cameras can be implemented in KStars?
I've been using two instances of Kstars and being limited to DSLR cameras only

I have a dual-telescope setup which I used in the past with Windows APT software (which allows dithering of two cameras by having two instances working together in a Client/Server configuration) but have started migrating to linux as I hope to have a fully automated system in future.

Is this possible for INDI+KStars+EKOS?

Best wishes,
Will.
