Was having trouble with Kstars. Noted that there was a newer version available so deleted old version and downloaded and installed latest Kstars. Everything seemed to be OK, but when I started the program the splash screen came up, and then it quit suddenly. Tried several times. Any ideas? I attach a text file of the failure log. Any help appreciated.

THanks

Hi new to this forum and Linux in general

I have a raspberry 2 and i want to use it for my astrophotography setup. I have installed the AstroPi3 and i have almost all of my gear at the system.
The problem i have is that i can't install the drivers for my atik 383l+ and atik efw2. i have downloaded the atikccd-1.26-armhf.deb but when i run it i get the following log

Moon-tracking - by: the.cakemaker

I‘d like to shoot a timelapse of the lunar eclipse here on friday. Now there are a few thoughts that i am not sure of.

1. How can i get the moon in the middle of my view WITHOUT actually see the moon. What i want do is the moonrise. That means the first thing in the view would be mountains and the moon would be behind them. You can see what i mean in the picture.

2. When i set the mount control to „tracking“ will the moon stay in my picture-centre? Without guiding? I mean for about 3 hours?

Installing INDI/KSTARS-EKOS on a NanoPC-T4 - by: PK

I just received my NanoPC-T4 today. While I tweak some bugs out of my Stellarmate, and use that system for my current astrophotography projects, I wanted to play with a new toy. I will attempt to get everything running on the NanoPC-T4 micro computer as it offers 4 gig RAM, better speed, RTC, and USB3. I have no idea how or if this will work, but it's a challenge and so I will step into it. I would very much appreciate all the help I can get along the way.

If anyone has any suggestions as to where I should start, I'm all ears.

Consistance of equipment parameter setting - by: RogueSquadron

I am not sure, if I missed some places to set setting but so far I would like to ask for the following:

I feel currently it is not totally consistent where to set different settings for the equipment. E.G. when taking photos with a DSLR ISO-settings can be made in the capture module, but not gain for CCDs. Same applies for exposure times of images and videos. Image exposure times can be set in the capture module, video exposure times need to be set in the device settings.

This goes even further when using the scheduler (or multiple jobs in a queue). Is it even possible to have one job taking 10 photos with gain 200 and another with gain 0 right after it without having to change the setting manually in the device tab?

I would recommend to have the settings in multiple places (device, job, scheduler) with scheduler overruling the job and job overruling the device.

10micron Wake On Lan - by: fenriques

10micron mounts now support Wake On Lan for remote switch on/off. Some clients (like Michel's MountWizzard) already support it and I think it's really useful.
It would be nice to have WOL also on Ekos. So that could be used for example in the startup / shutdown procedure of the scheduler.

KStars: Integration of Wishlist - Session Plan - Ekos Scheduler - by: RogueSquadron

Hello,

here are my wishes for the better integration of KStars Wishlist -> Session Plan -> Ekos Scheduler.

1.) Please allow adding to Ekos Scheduler also from the session plan, not only from the wishlist
2.) Please have an easy possibility to remove items from the Session plan, so far it is only possible via the pop up menu
3.) Please allow the same restrictions as in Ekos Scheduler when moving objects from the Wishlist to the Session Plan with the "Add objects visible tonight to session plan" menu entry (culmination time, altitude, moon separation). They can be optional, but should be available. The information is actually calculated and displayed, so it should be easy to have some filtering possibilities.

Thanks a lot!

Hi, I just wanted to take Calibration frames at different temperatures and made according jobs for that.

I realized when you edit the job the displayed target temperature is not updated in the screen. The jobs seem to fine though, the use the right temp and the stored job XMLs contain the right temperature as well.

Wrong Time Problem - by: the.cakemaker

Hi there!

When working with Kstars these days i realized that every time i start Kstars, the time is wrong by one hour.

I checked the settings in the mount tab, and it says utc offset 3. which is not right. But when i go to the locationsettings everything is right in my opinion. Dst setting is EU, what should be the right setting.

I have to say, that my system time is right.

Where is the fault?

Cheers
Niki

Mount Model lets solver crash repeatedly - by: RogueSquadron

Hello,

today I tried the mount model module with offline solving for the first time. I tried it several times and always the first try on solving offline let the solver process crash immediately.

Also as we were discussing the timeout for offline solving I let the solver run for more than 300 seconds this time and did NOT timeout itself, I had to stop it manually.

I will attach both logs.

ekos dither not received by PHD2 - by: alacant

Hi everyone
Whilst most ekos dither requests are received by PHD2, some are not.
ekos sends a dither, but PHD2 does not receive it:

Most INDI Drivers now supported on OS X!! - by: rlancaste

So a number of you in the forum know that I set a mission for myself earlier this year. (I think it was in May?) that I would try to get most of the drivers that worked on Linux to work in Mac OS. There were not that many that didn't work, and most of them were CCDs, so it felt like an achievable goal because I had already worked last year on getting Meade DSI, QHY, and Apogee working properly on Macs. So I felt like I could do it. Some of the drivers just required a small change or two, such as just one or two edits of where files are installed on Macs, and some required significant work, such as Fishcamp. For Fishcamp Starfish, I had to rewrite a significant portion of the driver because not only did it not work properly on Macs, it did not work properly on Linux either. A member of the forums was willing to loan me his Fishcamp and I spent 3 days on it and got it working pretty well. At this point, I think my goal is nearly achieved.

Here is a list of what I did:

I added support in Kstars on Mac by porting, enabling, including, modifying, or fixing the Linux drivers for SBIG, MGEN, ATIK, Fishcamp, INDIDuino, SSAG, Radio Sim, RTLSDR, and Point Grey Firefly.
The following are confirmed to be working well on OS X by you the members of the forum: SBIG, MGEN, Fishcamp, INDIDuino, Radio Sim, and RTLSDR.
The following ones need to be tested still on OS X: SSAG and Point Grey Firefly (Possibly ATIK too in order to make sure I included Peter’s driver correctly)

Thank you to Peter for letting us include your ATIK drivers and thank you to those of you in the forum who helped me test these and get these working.

And then I sent emails to Moravian Instruments and INovaCCD to get help from them in porting their Linux drivers to work on OS X. Jakub at Moravian did respond and ported their driver so that is now included too. I don't yet have a response from iNovaCCD. Hopefully soon.

There are only several drivers that are still not supported on OS X. I think they include The Joystick Driver, V4L2, and iNovaCCD. I already explained iNova, and the other two can't be supported because the libraries required to make them work are not available on OS X.

Also, since V4L2 is not supported on OS X, webcams were not supported, so I decided to make an INDI Webcam driver based on FFMPEG that would support any webcam supported by FFMPEG on OS X or Linux. On OS X, that includes any AV Foundation supported Camera including USB 2 and USB 3 webcams, and the integrated MacBook camera. Basically, if the camera can work in Photo Booth on your Mac, it can work in this driver. On Linux, that includes any camera supported by V4L2, libdc1394, and several other systems. And while making the driver, I found that I could also fairly easily add support for IP Cameras and mobile phone cameras such as integrated iPhone cameras and Android Cameras as well. For more details see here: www.indilib.org/devices/ccds/indi-webcam.html

Please stay tuned, this will all be included in the next upcoming release of KStars for Macs. Here is a screenshot of Ekos running on my Mac showing all the CCDs that will be supported in the next version:

Thanks,

Rob

Watchdog driver - by: TallFurryMan

$

I had a few issues with the watchdog driver not doing its job properly in the past.

My network setup is the following: kstars on a pc inside the house, remote INDI server outside the house, both connected using 2GHz wifi.

Periodically, I would observe that the remote server would be just too far to catch the wifi signal. Either I could not connect to the server, or I was loosing connection. Sometimes the connection would be lost in the middle of the night and not recovered. Basic network issues with range you would say.

So I added the Watchdog driver to the remote setup, to avoid leaving the mount to track and hit the tripod without any client to stop it.

I observed that when kstars was crashing (yeah old days), the watchdog would take over and park the mount properly.

But I also observed that when the remote server was loosing the wifi connection, the watchdog would not do its job. Besides, I also observed that kstars would not notify the disconnection when wifi was lost, although it would if the remote server stopped or crashed while online. In that freezed situation of course remote drivers would be unresponsive.

On one occurrence of wifi loss, I rebooted the remote, so the INDI server was "stopped", and brought the computer back in range. When I returned to kstars it had notified the disconnection. So there might be a different timeout.

This said, what concerns me is that the watchdog wouldn't do its job. I'm wondering what happens to the network stack of the remote server when it loses wifi. Specifically, I wonder if the watchdog driver is able to actually send the park requests if no network is available or if the network is hung. I would imagine loopback communication would still be possible, but well.

The remote server is headless and ssh-only, so this is a bit tricky to investigate...

Besides, the range issue disappeared when I upgraded for a newer wifi router. But the discussion may be interesting to others. Any idea?
